So the schedule has been released for my district:



Anyways, I take part in Number Sense, Calculator Applications, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics. Number Sense and Social Studies takes part at the same time with Calculator Applications just half an hour after!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!! WHY MUST YOU MAKE ME CHOOSE!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?

So basically, I must choose between whether to take the Number Sense and Calculator Applications tests versus Social Studies, since it is a 90 minute test and it usually takes me around a hour to complete it on average.

All my events are on just one day, Thursday, March 22nd. So that's good. I won't be missing two days of school. In fact, I MIGHT (I'm not 100% sure yet, it all depends on when we leave for Joshua) only miss part of Thursday considering all the events are in the afternoon.

But there is one thing I am certain, I will get back home LATE from districts, either in good spirits or greatly depressed that my season and career has ended.

that stinks, that why i stop doing social study my school awesme at it and i wasn't gonna cut it in the team because i'm the lowest scorer i average around 60-68 in the multiple choices, good luck on your choice. the only reason i join in the 1st place was because i was latino and wanted to learn more about my culture and other latino cultures

Really, where are you from? Republica del Salvador? I was born here and iv'e lived here all my life but my parents are from Chihuahua, Mexico. So yeah, i'm Hispanic.

Tough Decision, i would personally quit social studies, but i know you've studied hard for it, so i guess pick what you have a better shoot in, look at results from last year, and see if where you have a shot as an individual or a team. Good luck with that.

Yeah, I plan on going up to my social studies coach and telling her the bad news tomorrow before school. I have much more experience in Number Sense and Calculator Applications and taking part in two events rather than just Social Studies gives me an extra chance at moving on past districts. If I had data from this year over all the school's in my district on how well they fair in Social Studies, I probably would of made a different decision.

Basically, I am throwing out a year's work of studying down the drain. Well it's not that all bad, trying to think of it on the bright side, I've learned much about Latin American history that I would have probably never learned had I not taken UIL Social Studies.

I've studied hard in all my events ~ It # that I won't be able to see my final results in one of them :/

That really # chris, sorry for that. Like everyone else said, it depends on which events you think you can advance in. I have no idea about how good you are in Social Studies, and if you think you have a better shot in that than in NS and Calculator, then I guess you can do that.
However, NS and Calc seem like easy Region qualifiers, possibly even State. Not sure about Social Studies.
By the way, how has your NS been going?

When it comes to Number Sense, I am extremely slow when it comes to roman numerals. I'm so used to the standard number system and it takes me forever just to find out what I am multiplying/dividing/subtracting/adding...

I am also weak in questions such as these:

12.25 is 35% of ?

(5)^(-1) + 5^(-2) = ?

I'm a bit slow when it comes to multiplying mixed numbers, but that just takes practice.

Also, I've heard that I am not the only one trying to take advantage of the lack of super-ly talented people in Number Sense. All of them come from Joshua.
Taking a peak at Joshua's School website, they have 3 supposedly good guys in Number Sense:

They went to Glen Rose on Jan. 28th - I don't know who exactly showed up to that meet, but if there weren't any NS whiz~es at that meet, then this wouldn't mean much.

Learn your Roman Numerals and practice!! Must know.
I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000, consecutive means add, small behind large = subtraction.

For the 12.25, you need to know that 35^2 = 1225, memorization!!!
Then you can say it's just .35 x 35, so the answer is 35.
1/5 + 1/25 = 5/25 + 1/25 = 6/25

Beat those Joshua kids!!! :D good luck! I doubt they're getting super-scores, just enough to win, maybe around 100 or so.

See simple thinking. It's just my brain thinks differently than yours. I would of never came up with 35^2 and thought that negative exponents means you just stick it in the denominator and square/cube it, etc.

Keeping in mind that I am not yet focusing on the harder questions as you get deep into the test, as in the back side!!!

The only difference between you and I is experience. That question tripped me up before as well.

Yeah, there's a trick for that. If the tens digits are the same and the ones digits add up to ten:

Ex: [unparseable or potentially dangerous latex formula]

Then you can multiple the ones digits together to get the 1st half of your answer, and multiply the tens digits plus one together as follows:

[unparseable or potentially dangerous latex formula]
[unparseable or potentially dangerous latex formula]

Answer: [unparseable or potentially dangerous latex formula]

And then it's also better to remember that if the roman numeral has a bar over it, you gotta multiple it by 1000.

It's official that I decided on doing Number Sense and Calculator Applications and not Social Studies.

But there is a super small glimmer of hope - Earlier today, I talked with my school's UIL Academics Coordinator and Joshua's UIL Academics Coordinator, Anita Blackwell, is taking "reviews" for how the schedule is. She will definitely hear from a couple of our coaches and from our coordinator about the conflicts, but I still highly doubt that she will change the schedule after announcing it a couple days ago.

Well, that #. Good luck in NS and Calculator then! Get ready to get down for NS! It's gonna take quite a bit of dedication, and Region is in like a month in a half. I am assuming you should get past District.

Why don't you ask the district coordinator if you could come early and take Social Studies and then take NS and Calc at normal times? You could offer being locked in a separate room to preserve confidentiality of the test XD

Well, that's worth a shot! That's a good idea, and maybe they'll have some sympathy and let you have it. You have a better shot if you ask, and I don't see how it could hurt.

Your District's schedule is, for lack of a better term, weird. It does not follow the UIL conflict pattern at all (it isn't mandatory, but it is highly recommended). Even though you sound pretty definitive on your choice of events, check to see if your Region schedule is posted. You may have a conflict there, also.

I wish UIL MANDATED that all the meets follow the conflict pattern...... Then I would be able to do my 5 events.

And the Regionals schedule usually gets made after Districts.
