It would be cool if someone with computer knowledge would create an # bracket where someone could pick their favorite contestant or team for uil math & science. Probably starting with region. Some type of contest where u predict the winners all the way to state champ. I know it sounds dorky, but it would be pretty cool. I would try, but I have no skills with technology. What do you smart guys think? They have them for sports, so why shouldn't we? Maybe it could be added to this site. What do you guys think? Stupid idea or is this doable? Just an idea i've had in my head.

I'd be down for that, especially if it ends up as wide open as this year's NCAA men's basketball tourney.

I'm planning on making a "UIL Fantasy" game for state where we each pick a team of people who we think will have the highest scores...still hashing out the details, but I'll do that for sure.
Class of 2015
Liberty HS, Frisco - 4A (District 9, Region II)

Top Scores This Year:
NS - 247 (Region) / CA - 268 (District) / MA - 338 (District) / SC - 184 (District)

After searching for something on the forum, I came across this: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1351
and this: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1352

It seems that the UIL fantasy thing was already implemented by people before. I guess we could look at how they did it and try to replicate and modify it, if you guys are still interested in doing it.

From a brief look at the previous threads, it seems that certain rules are followed:

1. People pick "players" from a draft-type thing, but I don't know exactly how we'd implement that. We can figure this out later.
2. You can pick a utility (I guess a good overall guy), a guy for NS, MA, CA, and SC, and a sub (how this works we can figure out.)
3. You cannot pick a contestant twice on your roster (ex. one guy for both NS and Math.)
4. You may pick anyone from any conference, district, or region.

I think that we should be able to pick someone more than twice, between people. I cannot pick someone for NS and Math, but maybe I can pick someone for NS and someone else can pick that same person for math.

I don't know how the previous people scored, but we could come up with different formulas and see which one would work the best. Then we could see who picked the best team!

I don't really know who would manage the whole thing or how much effort it would take, but it doesn't seem that bad to do, and it might be fun, especially for the final days of Texasmath. Anyone up for it?

I really don't mind. Looks like fun. :)

Who decides the draft order?
Now I know the stakes, and I'm willing to show what I gots. I will see you all at state for the first and final time, so let's end the year with a bang! :)

This really reminds me of fantasy football(except kind of sad to people who don't do UIL.)

Time to bring my skills to this!!!

As far as a scoring system, there are several ways we can do this. We need to weight each event, because 10 points in Number Sense isn't as easy (or difficult) to get in Math, Calculator, or Science. The simple weighting at TMSCA State of each event to 400 isn't good enough. People get close to perfect scores in math, but it is very difficult to get that high in Calculator. I say that after Region, we weight the scores based on the scores around the State. Here's one way to do it:

After Region, we take the top 10-15 scores across the state, across all conferences, and take the arithmetic mean (or maybe RMS or something.) We take the highest one, and then do a simple multiplier to even out the other events to that score. For example, lets say this method gives 250 NS, 250 Calc, 300 Math, and 200 Science (the mean of the top 10 or 15 scores in the State is one of those numbers.) Then we'll give Math no multiplier, NS and Calc a 1.2x multiplier, and Science a 1.5x multiplier. Then, say I have someone on my team who scores a 300 in NS. His weighted score will now be 360, since 300 x 1.2 = 360. Then, I add up the scores for all of my event people, take the average score of my utility, and then add this to get my final score.

I see flaws in my method, but it's one solution to the scoring system. One possible flaw is that there is a heavier weight to higher scores. A 400 in NS gets a 480 (+80), while a 200 in NS gets a 240 (+40). This may or may not be a good thing. Also, the max NS weight might be higher than the max Math, Calculator, or Science weight (or vice versa.) If math goes unweighted, you max at 360, but NS can easily break 360 weighted. Thus if you draft badly in math and well in NS, you might beat someone who drafted badly in NS and well in math, unfairly.

I don't know if this is a good idea or not, but a possible solution would be to utilise the "square-root curve" for the point system.

You would take the square root of the score, and multiply it by the square root of the maximum score. For NS for example, max score is 400. If someone does make that score, then it would be still 400. However, if someone made a 225, then their score ends up being 300 (15 x 20).

If you want, we could scale the other tests similar to that, making the max score in every test 400 points. Thus, you would mutlply the square root of the score by a number, which differs from test to test. The numbers would be:
NS - [unparseable or potentially dangerous latex formula]
Math - [unparseable or potentially dangerous latex formula]
Science - [unparseable or potentially dangerous latex formula]
Calc- [unparseable or potentially dangerous latex formula]

But that is just a suggestion for the scoring system.

Oh, and we can pick anyone going to region for this, right?

The more I think about this, the better it sounds, and the more interesting it gets. I have some rules and structure for the whole competition that I have in mind. Here is an updated list:

1. People pick "players" from a draft, determined first by random numbers then "evened-out" to ensure nobody gets a distinct advantage or disadvantage. The draft is timed, and a person forfeits their draft position and moves to last if there is no draft choice in 16 hours.
2. You can pick a utility (an good overall guy), a guy for NS, MA, CA, and SC, and a sub for your team.
3. You cannot pick a contestant twice on your roster (ex. one guy for both NS and Math.)
4. You may pick anyone from any conference, district, or region.
5. You cannot choose yourself for anything.
6. There should be a small (maybe 10%) penalty if your pick doesn't make State.
7. There should be a small bonus (10%, 7.5%, and 5%) for the #1, #2, and #3 score statewide, in each event, respectively.
8. Fantasy scores are given by the contestant's score times a multiplier. The multiplier is found by taking the mean of the top 10 statewide scores in each event, and weighting these means to match the highest mean. OR scores are given by the square-root curve method.
9. The sub can replace one and only one person in any score (a 300 sub in Math beats a 280 Math pick.)
10. If the sub does not replace a score, then the score of the sub is not counted in the final score at all.
11. If someone chosen does not show up to Region, then either the alternate or the sub (whichever is highest) automatically fills in the empty spot. If a choice and the sub do not show up, the player is given the 10th highest score statewide as a score.
12. You can only pick people who have qualified for Region, except for 5th and 6th on an advancing team science contestants. If you pick the 5th or 6th person on a science team who did not qualify through top score in a subject, and the person is not chosen for Region, then the 4th highest score on the team at Region is given as a score.
13. You must pick at least one non-5A person.

I will add as necessary.

Shouldn't be. I was just emphasing that, because you never know who might go to state until the day of region.

Would trades be possible, like if we totally lose confidence in some guy or gal betwen the draft and region?

we should have trades cuz Bobby Shen is like doing horrible lately to his capabilities (6th CA, 15th SC)
So if anyone (like sxk) picks Bobby Shen for everything but Bobby Shen actually fails at region, then he may have to switch
Thats why I put my utility as Nsguy and my Sub as Bobby Shen

Hey and I think the winner of this game deserves a prize of some sort. Like - say - idk - but I really think we need to have like a first place, second place, and third place prize kinda thing
I guess we could like give the winner - or like the top 3 - some AoPs book... Just a suggestion...
As for who pays for the books - not me :P

One more thing: Everyone needs to have exclusive rights to picking themselves. It's no fun if you're on someone else's team.
