I just noticed there was a link in there. So I clicked it and saw what I saw on metacafe. A very geometric way to multiply... basically you can multiply digits by dividing a circli into concentric circles and then pie slices. I did wonder if Russian was such a language to explain multiplication in two lines.

My Russian is about as good as my Mandarin.

Meaning, I took a community ed. course in both, and now I have an awareness of the language, but not much else.

With Russian, once you learn the alphabet, you can at least sound out the letters. I know maybe fifteen Chinese characters, but I can read aloud the sentences above. Now, knowing what they all mean? That's a different story. I got maybe four or five words above, but that's what Babelfish is for.

Pretty close. The unstressed o's sound more like a's, and you have to watch out for hard vs. soft consonants (hard indicated by ь -- they're subtle differences) but yeah, pretty much that.
