My times hovered around 60 seconds at my best.
I read the booklet that came with the cube in... 2003(?), and started solving them the next day. Then, I regretted cheating. I've almost come up with my own algorithms so I can claim a solution, but I have a little left to finish on the bottom layer. Errr! I found a beautiful way to change the corners on the bottom without moving the edges, but that would mean I need something to do the edges first. Basically, I first did a bunch of simple minded trials and errors to find the algorithms, so I don't even think finding a solution to the Rubik's cube by one's self is even worthwhile... then again, I don't think I would have tried layers if I started a solution on my own. My gut feeling would be to solve a corner and its adjacent edges first, since you could still turn 3 sides without messing up that corner. Similarly, corners first lets you move the middles without messing up the corners. Maybe it will someday merit my time using "semicommutative" group theory.
