Yeah, we may want to do a top overall individual of each decade.

For the old timers, I'd suggest David Gavenda, Rio Hondo (won NS State in `46 as an eighth grader, `47 as a freshman, UIL came up with a new rule that state champions couldn't compete, but it wasn't in time to keep him competing in `48 (where he got second in state.) Alvin Gregg of Plainview made it to state in NS or Slide Rule each year from `49 to `52 (but never won state.) Then there's Jose Eloy Cuellar, Zapata, who won Number Sense and Slide Rule in `73 and `74 (he won number sense in `75, but only got second in Slide Rule) We have copies of the but you'd have to ask Mr. White for copies of the tests from `46 through `52.

The UIL is using the year that the school year started. The first state meet was in 1911.
The school year was from Sept. 1910 to May 1911.

The 1973 State Championship in Slide Rule and Number Sense actually happened
in May of 1974. I remember that because I was a 15 yr old sophomore from Zapata High School.

Thanks! When I went up to the UIL state offices to compile this information, they didn't know where it was, but they used to have this information in the C&CR for old years, so that's where I compiled it. I'm sure there's mistakes on it, and have fixed a few based on when participants recognized it, but I'm trying to honor the memories of those that came before us. I know my students thing that math team is a relatively new thing, so when I show them the old Slide Rule tests, or the Number Sense tests from the `60's I have, or when I talk about David Gavenda and Dillard Faries (both who I interviewed a few years ago,) they don't know about the rich history of our competitors and competitions.

First, I will pimp a former Hirschi grad. I believe Chad Gamble won UIL state number sense from 1988 - 1990. Three straight years as a 4A state champ.

Then, I will # for myself. For my last three years, the only time I was outscored at a competition I was at was at UIL state my sophomore year, 232 - 212 on one of the hardest tests I have seen to date. Don't think anyone broke 300 that year. I think 292 was state champion, but Fernando Rivera may have barely broke 300. The guy I lost to that year at state, I had beaten at region by over 100, 318 -214.

My junior and senior years, 1992 and 1993, at Wichita Falls High School (4A), I won state and also beat all the other conferences champions. My junior year I scored a 386, Fernando Rivera of Mission(5A) had the second highest overall score with a 368. Fernando Rivera was a 3-time state champion in 5A. There was a missing question so the max score that year was a 395. I missed CXV - V = ____(roman).

My senior year I scored a 382. The next highest score in 4A was a 283 by Robby Utley. The next highest score came from a kid at Rider(5A) High School (another Wichita Falls school), who scored a 319. There was only one other score in the whole state above 300, a 301 by the 2nd place 5A kid.

I'm just giving facts, so I hope I'm not advertising too strong. The highest number of questions I missed at a high school competition was 7, I believe.

I'm nominating myself because I'm gangster. I have no scores to back this up. I made state in 3 events freshman year and 4 sophomore year. I choked at important meets freshman year, and when I don't choke I'm not all that great.

I'm just giving facts, so I hope I'm not advertising too strong. The highest number of questions I missed at a high school competition was 20, I believe.

Also, Hirschi number sense, this year as we are a AAA who beat all AAAAA's in regionals and had our top 4 sweep regionals as well as make top 8 in state I believe, with 1 and 2 ours.

For 5A UIL Calculator, I second stupidityismygam's nomination of Kevin Chen for a 1st place finish last year at UIL state and most likely another this year. A very strong reversal from his second place finish at the TMSCA state meet in 9th grade.

For 4A UIL Math, even though she is not performing as well this year (so far), I nominate Tracy Lu for her three consecutive UIL mathematics championships 2007, 2008, 2009.

I also nominate (probably needlessy, this nomination is quite obvious :D) Dillon Hanson for 1A UIL Math, Number Sense, and Calculator.

Although he "pimped" himself already, I would like to re-pimp Anthony Newberry. His stats:

1993- 4A Calculator Apps - 3rd Place
4A Number Sense - 1st Place
1st Place Number Sense Team

1992- 4A Number Sense - 1st Place
1st Place Number Sense Team

1991- 4A Number Sense - 2nd Place

After placing 2nd in State as a Sophomore, he realized how lonely it was by himself. That summer he taught his own friends into a 2-time State Championship team in Number Sense. The following two years, as you can see, he placed first both times and won team as well.
Overall, he is a superb mathematician. I have personally seen him finish a Number Sense test in under 7 mins. He now continues to coach the Hirschi Math Team, which I'm sure those in the math world have heard of.
Whatever award may be given to him is surely deserved.

I will now nominate the 2010 version of Hirschi's number sense team. We had three of the top 4 scores in 3A number sense, won by 142 points (727 - 585.). We outscored every team in the state at regionals and state including the 5A teams(at state 727 - 696(Clements)), and I know it was a down year in 5A number sense teams, but still. This is the first time, I believe in 10 years that any team below 5A has had the highest team score. I also think we were the only team in the state with three scores above 200. There were only 14 total scores above 200, only five 200s below 4A, and Hirschi had three of them. What really says something about the depth of our team was the 2009 sophomore Brian Gregg, who finished 8th in the state a year ago couldn't make the four-man team this year. It's a shame for his sake we couldn't test five. I thanked him yesterday for making it competitive just to make our team. Brian made us better. It's a shame I can't give him a medal.

I will not tout Nathan Shih as one of the best number sensers of the decade, but maybe one of the most improbable stories. For those of you who don't know. Nathan Shih has only done number sense for two years. Two years, two individual state championships, two team state championships. He is one of the hardest working, most focused, and driven young men I have ever met. I told him yesterday, I will miss him. The most hard thing to replace will be his incredible determination. He used to come by my room when he was waiting to leave for swimming and eventually, I asked him if he wanted to try number sense, so late his sophomore year, probably after Hirschi lost at regionals, Nathan started practicing. He asked for practice tests over the summer, and actually did them. The rest is history. It was a great two year ride.

I thoroughly support newberry's nomination of himself as well as this years math team. As a 1A competitor from legendary Midway HS,I know Newbs was a legend in his own time. We all knew who he was and we strived to beat his scores.

Years later, I am more than fortunate enough to be his coworker/co-coach and friend. He may come off strong @ times, but @ heart he is incredibly kind and a wonderful, selfless coach. He puts in way more hours each week than anyone but I know, and w/o complaint. I strive to be the kind of coach that he is.

Our team this year faced the state tests fearlessly. That is why I second his nomination of their efforts. To beat the 5 A scores is pretty incredible and I'm proud to be one of their coaches.
