Estimations

hey!
So in Number sense, I've seen that on the UIL tests they've recently started putting this problem thats like multiply 4 members of an arithmetic sequence (estimation of course).
It's something like, 21x43x65x87.
Whenever my teammates and I do this, we waste a lot of time and end up still missing it. Any suggestions?

gah these problems are horrible. I don't think there's an easy shortcut for them, so I'd recommend coming up with something on the spot, or just skipping(that's what I do). For this one, something like 1/5*100*45*65*7/8*100=9*56*10000=5040000 would be good.

Hmm... well you can work your way around these somehow. I think this was... #60 on the Region test? I think I put 480000 (I just 'felt' there were 6 digits), so I missed it by a factor of 10. Yet another dumb mistake >:(

I would just treat these as fractions, like 21 as 1/5, and 87 as 7/8, then cancel and whatever and not put one less zero than you're supposed to. I think I had two of those mistakes on Region. 20 and 60?

EDIT: By the way Wesley, even 4800000 is 51,142 out of range.

Oh, well I though I put 480000. I might either be remembering wrong, because I could've sworn I was in range with a zero... I guess now I am double wrong lol. Luckily I can only lose 4 pts per problem :P.
And I'm pretty sure he's Aditya Jain. We have a Clements person on here! I think.

Ok, well I didn't think I trash talked much.
Umm... well State will be interesting. I took the State qualifier with only one warmup... and you'll see how that worked for me a bit later. I don't think I'm supposed to disclose any results yet.
So now I think I might go to three warmup tests, one or two early, then one before.

I took it at school. I did OK (not as well as I hoped) on Calculator.
Math was bad. Well... that kind of score wouldn't be very competitive at State, I'll say.
And NS... worst NS test in a long time. I don't think I'm even supposed to discuss things such as the speed of the test or anything else even remotely specific, such as column difficulty.
Once again, let's just say that tears were shed on my behalf (not literally.)

In situations like this I do an incredible thing called "guess a random number and move on."

It always surprises me when it doesn't work, but hey, at least I got to the next problem.
