SD Rules

I can do anything, as long as I have my handy-dandy Calculator.

SD Rules

Postby The3point14 » Sun Nov 12, 2006 7:45 pm

Does anyone mind telling me the specific rules regarding the Significant Digit (SD) problems on the Calculator Applications test, I was never informed about what to do on them. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

When adding or subtracting, the answer has as many decimal places as the number with the least decimal places

4.01 + 4.003 = 8.013 actually, 8.01 for correct sig figs

When multiplying or dividing, the answer has as many sig figs as the number with the least amount of sig figs

8.02 * 3.0001 * 5.3 = 127.52... actually, 130 for correct figs (round the actual answer to two sig figs)

Ah, I see, I usually just skip anytime I see SD, since I never had an explaination about what to do on those questions. This will hopefully eliminate any confusion for my calculator team. Thank you.
