TMSCA-7 #8

I can do anything, as long as I have my handy-dandy Calculator.

TMSCA-7 #8

Postby MathMaestro » Tue Jan 19, 2010 1:16 pm

10O-8 original problem
What is 44+51+59+...+338? ___________ integers

Shouldn't it be
What is 44+51+59+...+348? ___________ integers

Quadratic regression of (0, 44), (1, 51), (2, 59) is y = 0.5x^2 + 6.5x +44
and extrapolates to the point (19, 348).

Therefore, sum(0.5x^2 + 6.5x +44, x, 0, 19) = 3350

The TMSCA-7 #8 solution was
( ((338-44)/2) + 1)/ 2 ) (44 + 338) = 8218

Is there an error with this problem?

The calculator test writer wishes to express an apology for the typo on TMSCA Test #7 problem 10O-8. The intended problem was a simple arithmetic series: 44 + 51 + 58 + ... + 338.

The solution should be [(338 - 44)/7 + 1]/2 x (44 + 338) = 8213 (integer).
