I have a couple things.
First, why did you substitute in [unparseable or potentially dangerous latex formula]? Also, if that is valid, then you can simplify [unparseable or potentially dangerous latex formula].
You don't need to assume R = 1, because you can just divide both sides by R squared. However, it's valid either way.
And yes, if the segment area is twice as much, I don't see the problem with multiplying the left side by two. Make sure you know which side to multiply though.
When you went from [unparseable or potentially dangerous latex formula] to [unparseable or potentially dangerous latex formula], I don't see why you made the [unparseable or potentially dangerous latex formula] substitution, or how you even got that. Seems a lot simpler to just use [unparseable or potentially dangerous latex formula] to me.
