Geometric Mean

What could be so hard. It's a multiple-choice test for Pete's sake.

Geometric Mean

Postby bs42 » Fri Mar 23, 2012 7:02 pm

So I figured that this problem dealt with geometric mean, but I'm not sure how to solve it.
Quarter:
1 10% growth
2 5% growth
3 12% growth
4 8% decrease

Find the average percentage of growth.
ANS: 4.45%

I'm useless, but I'd like to know that too. Where's nsguy when you need him? Let's bait him here with a cookie. Anyone got one?

Add the percent change to 100%, to get the following values:
1.1, 1.05. 1.12, .92.
If you take the geometric mean of these, you get 104.45%, meaning 4.45% average percent growth.
And see, you single me out of everyone on the forum. Maybe I should stop answering questions ;)

Oh. You use the geometric mean. I thought you were supposed to average them. *facepalm*

Do you want me to stop?

Relax, you're putting yourself down too much. At this rate, by senior year, you'll be excellent! You should be really good by next year, as well, and junior year.
