Trig*Star is arriving again for 2008. Check with your UIL coach, principal, or academic/trigonometry coordinator - in all likelihood, he/she has received or will soon receive a registration packet for the Chapter competition.
Individual chapters may have scholarships for participants. In addition, winners and runners-up from each chapter will be invited to participate in the State Competition, with $1000 and $500 scholarships available to the State Champion and State Runner-Up. From there, the State Champion will be invited to compete for the national title and one of three scholarships, valued at $2000, $1000, and $500 for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, respectively. At the state and national levels of competition, teachers of scholarship-winning competitors are awarded with like and half amounts, respectively.
The competition features 4 multi-part problems; the first three problems require general applied trigonometry. The fourth problem features a real-world application of trigonometry to surveying. Each problem component has its own point value based on difficulty; the tiebreaker to score is completion time.
Trig*Star is co-sponsored by the National Society of Professional Surveyors and the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors.
